Last month we launched the year’s Merchav Batuach trainings at Queens College, with a meeting of Orthodox allies . The student-organizers were concerned: would those who signed up forget the commitment they had made? Would those who showed up stay for the entire three hours? The result: twenty students, campus leaders all, showed up, and stayed long after the training. There was excitement in the air! Queens College—a very diverse campus with a large Orthodox student population, including a large number of Sefardic and Bukharian Jews—could become an even more inclusive and welcoming space for its Orthodox LGBT students. We thank the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York for recognizing the importance of this initiative and making it possible this year. Next stop, in December: Barnard and Columbia here we come!
