The Make Space for Difference Project
When people make a stamp, they are all the same; when God makes the human stamp, every one of them is absolutely unique.
From the The Dignity of Difference, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
Based on Mishna Sanhedrin 4:5
Eshel and Uri L’Tzedek are proud to present the Make Space for Difference project.
What is it?
The goal of this project is to convey that the acceptance of human diversity is a religious value. This sticker will help students, congregants, and all who enter Jewish communal spaces to know that their educators and religious leaders actively embrace them. We took our inspiration from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks who, in 2002 published his award winning book, The Dignity of Difference. The book makes the case for the practice of hospitality and offers a vision for celebrating human diversity.
Who is this for?
The Make Space for Difference sticker is for Rabbis, educators, mental health professionals, and leaders in Orthodox communities. The Make Space for Difference sticker promotes the health and wellbeing of participants in Orthodox communities who may be getting messages that the way they are different is unacceptable.
How does this sticker make an impact?
- Feeling seen
- Sparks conversation
- Serve as a teaching tool
Who is behind this project?
Eshel is a national organization working to build LGBTQ+-inclusive Orthodox communities. Uri L’Tzedek is a social justice organization that works to engage Orthodox individuals and communities in the mitzvah of protecting the stranger. We have joined together to send a message to vulnerable youth in schools and marginalized people of all ages in Orthodox synagogues and institutions that our tradition asks us to approach difference with an open heart.
By displaying the Make Space for Difference Sticker you are affirming the following principles:
- I recognize that every human being is created in the Image of God and is consequently an invaluable and unique expression of God’s creative genius.
- I affirm my commitment to treat every human being with the dignity and respect deserving of an image of God, regardless of their race, gender, age, sexual orientation, ability or disability.
- I will work to foster a school environment that is accepting of the many forms of human difference and diversity.
- I will do my best to stand up in the defense of anyone who is bullied or disparaged for being different.
